In 2020 tens of thousands of people defied Covid restrictions to march in support of the families of Indigenous Australians who have died in custody, as part of the global Black Lives Matter movement. Five years on, the same families face fresh grief.
Another recent Indigenous death in custody brings the total since 1991 to 597, showing the ongoing history of systemic racism and prompting further calls for an independent investigation and an Indigenous-led oversight body.
