Victoria’s First Peoples’ Assembly Historic Treaty Update

Victoria’s First Peoples’ Assembly have completed state-wide treaty negotiations.

In pending legislation expected within weeks, the First Peoples’ Assembly of Victoria will be an elected body with the power to:

• Question Ministers
• Call public hearings
• Advise the government

And defined accountability powers to cover:

• Consultation
• Decision-making
• The implementation of Yoorrook Justice Commission recommendations, and other government policies and programs. 

The proposed new assembly will be elected for a four-year term.

“Under Australia’s looming first formal treaty agreement, Victoria’s elected Aboriginal body will be given powers to create new institutions. 

The First Peoples’ Assembly says it plans to create a new education facility to boost the skills of Aboriginal people across the state. 

Victoria’s first treaty is expected to be signed before the end of this year, with the Statewide Treaty Bill expected to be introduced to parliament in coming weeks.”
