Fiona Ross, spokesperson for Friends of Public Housing Victoria (FOPHV) and a public housing tenant, condemns Labor’s plan to demolish Melbourne’s high-rise public housing towers as a form of privatisation.
Many of the buildings are still structurally sound, and recent independent investigations contradict claims that they’re “crumbling” and in need of demolition. The proposed “affordable housing” replacements are largely market-based, and exclude many low-income renters — and as FAIN knows and have said, “affordable housing” is not public housing.
Fiona Ross urges the government to stop the demolitions, invest in maintaining the existing public housing, and adopt the Greens’ stronger stance on protecting and expanding public housing.
‘The Allan government needs to rethink its position on public housing — and quickly — in order to avoid a deepening humanitarian crisis.’
