ACOSS (the Australian Council of Social Service) has partnered with UNSW Sydney to undertake a research and impact collaboration to sharpen the national focus on poverty and inequality in Australia. The partnership monitors trends in poverty and inequality over time, explores drivers, and develops solutions to sharpen the focus and stimulate action to tackle these policy challenges.
Their 2024 report “Inequality in Australia 2024: Who is Affected and How” summarises their latest findings on the impact of inequality across Australia.
It shows how inequality occurs when disproportionate shares of income are concentrated amongst the wealthiest groups:
- The top 20% hold significantly and disproportionately more of Australia’s money than the bottom 20%.
- Most of the nation’s wealth is controlled by this top 20% through private property, shares, and superannuation.
- Such inequality harms economic growth and social stability for everyone, especially those living in poverty.
